  7. "American music is perhaps the most influential music in 
  8. the world, yet our culture is dying slowly from the inside," 
  9. warned trumpeter Wynton Marsalis.  "American children 
  10. cannot begin to understand music without instruction."

  12. Speaking at a national forum held by the National 
  13. Commission on Music Education, Marsalis lent his voice to 
  14. the growing movement of educators, musicians and 
  15. business leaders whose aim is to make certain that the 
  16. study of music and other arts are included among our 
  17. national goals for education.
